At first the Winchesters had the potential to be a nice, happy family from Kansas, with two loving parents and two adorable sons. Dean was the first born to Mary & John Winchester, followed four years later by his younger brother Sam. It was this birth that caught the attention of the Yellow Eyed Demon, causing the death of Mary Winchester and the reason behind the families troubled history. Unbeknowst to the remaining family, the YED had been there with a purpose, one that would take twenty-two years to surface in the form of precognitions for Sam Winchester.
It was John - determined to find the reason behind his wifes death - that led the family in the direction of the Supernatural. The three of them never settled down anywhere for long, constantly moving around and both boys were taught how to deal with the Supernatural - Dean more so than same. The eldest brother played the role of perfect son, but Sam soon drifted away and eventually found his escape by going off to college.
However, he couldn't escape the past forever and soon enough Dean came back into his life, all but begging him to help locate thier missing father, and with just the one Hunting trip, Sam was dragged back into the world of the Supernatural. His girlfriend was murdered in the same fashion as his mother by the same demon and his father's hunt became his own.
Their first encounter with the Yellow Eyed Demon and their attempt to kill him almost cost Dean his life, but it was John that ended up selling his soul to save his eldest Son, trading in an enternity in hell for Dean's life. Months later, after Sam had been kidnapped by the YED and forced to compete in a 'game' to see which of the demons psychic 'children' would lead the army's of hell, it was Dean that ended up having to trade in his soul to bring back Sam after he'd been stabbed. Sealed with a kiss, Dean was given one year to live before the Hall Hounds would come with him and he would be carted off to the pits of hell. On top of this, the brothers - with the help of Bobby - were unable to stop the opening of Hells Gate, an event which resulted in the release of hundred of demons from the pits of hell.
Try as he might in the following year Sam was unable to save his borther and it was Lillith that all but gave him to the Hounds, landing him Hell.

It didn't take them long however to find out who provided this escape, far-fetched as the idea seemed at the time. Of course that idea didn't seem so insane when it came to the demons, who were scared whitless of what was supposedly an Angel.
Castiel soon explained to Dean why he and every other Angel was there, putting it down to Lilleth and her wish to release Lucifer into the world. By breaking the sixty-six seals that held him prisoner, she would set him free and the Angels were there to see that, that didn't happen. Becuase it couldn't.
The Apocolypse is coming...
...and the Winchesters are right in the middle of it.
